GOP congressman supports ‘proud right-wing terrorist’
House Rep from northern California says public health option a ‘threat to democracy’
US House Representative Wally Herger, of California’s 2nd congressional district, expressed “enthusiastic approval” of a town-hall attendee who described himself as a “proud right-wing terrorist,” newspapers in northern California report.
According to the Redding Record Searchlight, an incident broke out at a town hall at Simpson University in Redding on Tuesday when Herger signaled encouragement to a 67-year-old town hall attendee, Bert Stead, who called himself a “proud right-wing terrorist.”
“Amen, God bless you,” Herger reportedly replied to the comment. “There is a great American.”
That was enough for 50-year-old Marisa Hewitt, who called the largely anti-health reform crowd “a bunch of racist haters” and started “using the f-bomb” after the controversial comments.
That did not sit well with crowd. One individual grabbed Hewitt by the arm and ejected her from the hall with the words “you’re outta here.”
Herger also told the crowd that the health care reform legislation currently before Congress is a “threat” to American democracy.
“Our democracy has never been threatened as much as it is today,” the Mount Shasta Area Newspapers quoted Herger as saying.
The comment evidently was received with “a loud standing ovation.”
Herger, who was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1986, has been sending out fliers in which he states that the health reform bill will create “havoc” in the US health care system.

And I’m sure that 67-year old Bert is all signed up for his Medicare and Social Security, so the other 46,000,000 of you can go piss off.
Bravo!
“Proud Right Wing Terrorist?” Aren’t all Republicons right wing terrorists? As far as I am concerned calling yourself a Republicon these days means you support their form of terrorism, whether it is scaring senior citizens with imaginary death panels, or supporting the torture of known to be innocent “detainees” or worse. You know. Torture them into confessing lies so you can justify wars for profit.
Not to mention economic terrorism. You know. Making sure the SEC took an 8 year break with Madoff’s, and bankers running wild with other people’s money, and keeping it all “off balance sheet”, so investors don’t know they are on the hook for TRILLIONS.
Republicans Are A Disease

Remember the “guns and religion” faux pas? What would you call this? These people are dangerous. They can barely cover their racism in their remarks, some don’t even bother. Why are we giving them voice? Stay away from Redding and remember most of these miscreants are “older” and will be gone in the next 10 yrs or so. Unfortunately they breed.
“proud right-wing terrorist.”
So what else is new? -do these morons think AlQaeda is a Left wing organization? MOST Terrorists are Right wingers.
hate to admit it, but i know some folks like this. they are scared. they have been scared since before the event that “changes everything”. they are white people watching their influence and caste ranking slowly diminish, while people of color and people who don’t even speak english thrive all around them. they are witnessing changes beyond their control. they need to point fingers …
they voted ronnie raygun for governor and got to vote for him twice as president too. why? because he made folks feel good as he cut california funding for higher education to those thankless dfhs who didn’t see commie dominoes as an eminent threat or a reason to kill mostly rice and pig farmers in vietnam. he closed the mental hospitals in calif just as he would later destroy federal mental health, too. karma? ronnie, “showed us that deficits don’t mean anything.” … dick cheney
these frightened attendees are rich farmers who have benefited from gov programs for decades. others are ‘double dippers’ retired military or state employees w/ additional postal retirement earnings scared about california’s impending bankruptcy (repeal the jarvis act aka prop 13 requiring 2/3 majorities and legislation to fix califs problems can be passed) and want to blame someone other than their transparent, selfish, greedy, holier-than-thou selves.
Since he claims to be a terrorist, shouldn’t he he arrested and questioned about his terrorist activities? I understand that the CIA still uses Blackwater. They should use Blackwater to question him with whatever means they have necessary to get the answers they want. A few hours of waterboarding him should do it. He did, after all, admit to being a terrorist. If he isn’t arrested, then any other terrorist can use him as their defense as to why they cannot be arrested for their own terrorist activities.
Fight terrorism, vote Democrat.
fight fascism, don’t vote either of the two fake-opposition parties, vote 3rd.
Change the word “democracy” to “corporate profiteering” and you’ll see what he _really_ meant. He’s using words that don’t apply so he can convince those too stupid to understand.
Democracy = people vote for something and it happens.
The people voted for Obama knowing he was going to take on this health care industry. Hence, _failing_ to enact _meaningful_ reforms that benefit the public (even at the expense of insurance companies) is what will destroy Democracy.. So, if the right-wing can obstruct this effectively, they will have effectively destroyed Democracy in America.
And, in your reading of this article, change “wreak havoc with” to “diminish profits for”, and you see his concern with what will happen to the health care industry.. what his REAL concern is. Because it certainly isn’t with the American People.
What the hell do Republicans know about democracy? They don’t believe in it. They believe in corporate plutocracy and stealing elections. Their only contact with democracy is when they try to ship it out to other countries like Iraq, because they don’t want it growing over here.
Most rightwingers are terrorists or at least terrorist sympathizers - whether they call themselves Muslims or Xtians or something else. They are lawless, thinking that because they know how to fire a gun and embrace a bizarre religion, that makes them above any nation’s laws.
As a previous poster mentioned, many of these people are old and will be dead in 10 years. Also, there are fewer of them now than at any time in recent history - a black man couldn’t have gotten elected president 10 years ago because there were more of these rightwing racist voters around. So that’s all good.
These oldsters are also hypocrites: they have benefitted more than any generation before them from gov’t programs: the GI Bill for college, VA loans for homes, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid - many of these working class and middle class people have been able to retire or at least semi-retire at age 62(!) when previous generations had to work until they dropped or became an economic burden to their kids. But they say they don’t want gov’t messing with THEIR Medicare. LOL. Medicare is a gov’t program, you idiots!
There truly is no fool like an old fool.
Sparkey is right, he has given at a minimum, the appearance of providing support for terrorism.
This is what FDR meant by “the only thing to fear is fear itself.” Fear is the Republican platform and the unfortunate thing is our educational institutes and television media condones fear over empowerment. If children and teenagers were taught the real history behind all humanity’s bad times we wouldn’t have these Republican thugs.
Filling empty minds….
People that let their so-called “representatives” do their thinking for them are equal to, or more dangerous than terrorists.
Evidently Redding California’s mindless propaganda sponges are real suckers for this kind of bullshit.
Oh sure, these people know lots about democracy, that’s why they shout down anyone who disagrees with them and why they physically assault them, mmmm-hmmm, they all paid a lot of attention in civics class…oh wait, they didn’t, obviously.
Who woulda thought that the boomer generation was rife with morons and hypocrites? Anyone with a pulse. And California? Why it has the granola reputation is beyond me considering it was one of the only states in the union that had laws enjoining people to exterminate the native population. If anything, California is a great example of a super capitalist model and a settler state, just another North American craphole of iniquity.
A commenter on another blog related how California had laws on the books that made it illegal to sell your residential property to blacks right up to the early 60s or so in some counties.
Headlines accross America should be reading “House Representative Wally Herger (R) wants God to bless American Terrorist” with the second line reading “CIA Arrest Herger during search of his home and offices”
Can you imagine where Fox would go if he were a democrat…
CA Rep. Wally Herger says God blesses terrorists?!
What a loonie!
At one point, the French bourgeois was elated that they basically “fooled” the peons into supporting them. At some point, these right-wing-nuts will loose their only tooth and find out they can’t eat the horseshit anymore .
ROFL! Love it! Dennycrane rocks.
Aren’t Wally Herger and Bert Stead the guys who play dueling banjos in Deliverance?
Mouth Breather alert! Mouth breather alert!
Oher people’s terrorism is wrong, but YOUR terrorism is okay? Um, something just a little worng there, ain’t it? So how’s this for terrorism: fifty trillion years from now, you gonna care?
We are losing our democracy exactly because physical force trumps public discourse. This right-winger does not know the definition of democracy he so violently abuses in the name of it’s defense.
James Madison would agree that this is a danger to our nation’s government.
“By rendering the labor of one, the property of the other, they cherish pride, luxury, and vanity on one side; on the other, vice and servility, or hatred and revolt.”
James Madison
So it should come as no surprise at all what’s happening. The bullies want to force a plan on unwilling people, the unwilling people show up ready to defend themselves. The guys with the guns aren’t trying to force the other side to do a damn thing except leave them alone.
“Our democracy has never been threatened as much as it is today,”
That’s certainly true enough, but the people who are threatening it are the people who cheered that line. There has never been a greater threat than the fascist gun nuts who think that anything that upsets their little apple cart by actually fulfilling the promise of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution is antiAmerican. Examples that have gotten them all upset are the Voting Act, the various civil rights laws that allow minorities to go to school and be treated equally, Social Security, Medicare, Wade vs. Rowe, …
Two hundred and 30 some years ago these people would be considered Tories because they are married to the idea that people need a strong man, a king, to tell them what to do and that people who didn’t do what they were told should be punished.
leejunfan: Come on, get real! The health care corporations are robbing and murdering our citizens by the thousands every day. So just who’s labor is getting stolen when insurance costs $1000 a month here and it only costs the British taxpayers $57 in taxes. Who do you think is getting that extra $943 per month? Then, as soon as you get a real illness or injury Amerikan corporations drop you in mid stream with no where to turn. Been there, Done that, it’s for real. This is a fight to see if we can throw off the same corporate feudal system that we once threw off in 1776, so don’t think Madison is on YOUR side. You Jesus Nutters only know what the corporations pay the Fellowship Foundation to put in your empty cult riddled heads anyway. Why am I even bothering to try to communicate with brain dead Fundie Nutter anyway?
