Update (below): Man with gun identified as Ron Paul supporter, interviewed on MSNBC
President Obama traveled to Portsmouth, New Hampshire Tuesday for what many feared could be a rowdy ‘town hall-style’ meeting at a time when some foes of his healthcare overhaul have shouted down lawmakers holding similar events around the country. But no such disruptions occurred at the event.
Earlier, MSNBC’s Ron Allen reported that cameras filmed a protester with a handgun strapped to his leg the meeting before Obama arrived. The man was seen carrying a sign saying “It’s time to water the tree of liberty.”
The man’s “tree of liberty” sign is a reference to Thomas Jefferson, who said “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”
Allen says the Portsmouth police chief told him the man’s gun is legal, because he is on private property — he is on the grounds of a nearby church. Police say his gun is registered and he can keep it on him as long as it is not concealed.
“The police are obviously keeping a close eye on this man … and I suspect that he won’t be here when the president arrives in a few hours’ time,” Allen told viewers.

William Kostric is a married man in his mid 30S who works in sales. He says he moved here to New Hampshire from Arizona about a year ago, because it’s a “live free or die” state — and he thought Arizona was becoming too restrictive with its gun laws.
He’s passing out a bookmark that says, “Join the Second Amendment Revolution, the most exciting pro-liberty movement in over 200 years.”
He’s a Ron Paul supporter, who opposes just about everything Obama, including health care reform.
Kostric was armed with a 9-mm Smith and Wesson strapped to his leg, attracting the attention of an apparently undercover officer who warned him to keep more than 1,000 yards away from the school. He complied.
Kostric was initially some 75 yards from the entryway, the report added. He was, however, legally within his rights to carry the holstered weapon on a public sidewalk.
Secret Service monitored his activity the whole time, but let him carry out his constitutionally-protected activity since he was not wielding the firearm in a threatening manner.
Kostric is reportedly a member of the Free State Project, promoted in New Hampshire.
He was also interviewed by an obviously angry Chris Matthews on MSNBC, who asked why he brought “a God damn gun” to an event with the president. Watch:

New Hampshire TV station WMUR is reporting that the Secret Service had a pick-up truck towed away from the site of President Obama’s town hall in Portsmouth “for security reasons,” after a bomb-sniffing dog circled the vehicle several times.
“Officials said a Secret Service bomb dog had a hit on the truck, but they did not say whether there was a specific threat detected,” WMUR reports. “The truck had masonry equipment in it … It was parked in the furthest lane away from the rally, closer to media satellite trucks.”
An administration official said, “He’ll discuss what health insurance reform will mean for Americans who already have insurance, highlighting the consumer protections he laid out in recent weeks and focusing on ending denial of coverage based on pre-existing conditions.”
Around 1,800 people are expected to attend Tuesday’s meeting. According to the Associated Press, 70 percent were given tickets based on a random lottery — “a potentially dicey crowd in a state known for its grass-roots political activism.”
Added AP: “Hours before Obama was to arrive at Portsmouth High School, the road leading to the event site was lined with people — about 100 supporters of Obama’s health care overhaul on one side and about half as many opponents on the other.”

emergency injunction? this is state law, not some sunday school recess rule. its funny actually that you only need a permit to carry a concealed gun in new hampshire. but quite honestly, what is the problem? nearly every state allows concealed weapons permits, which means in private and public every citizen should be treated as if they are already carrying. the fact that it is open and visible is just because he is unlicensed to carry it hidden, or in his case, because hes a giant sable rattling douche. they are not putting the president in public places without sweeping and screening and restricting access.

There are a lot of states that have “open carry” laws which means he was legal to carry his weapon in a side holster. Washington state is one of those that you can carry openly.

I live on the MA/NH border, am in NH a lot, and I have never seen anyone carrying a weapon. So when he said that NH-ites do it all the time, he was either incorrect or projecting. But he was still legal to do what he did.

I agree with the points that weshallremain has made in his/her post and urge RawStory to consider what’s being pointed out. I’m not one to pigeonhole myself as either liberal or conservative, but I’m willing to admit that I’m a strict constitutionalist (as intended by our Founders). I have noticed more of a “left” slant here, in articles of late and although I tend to support and agree with the points within them, I by no means want to see any side silenced, because they may disagree. Open dialogue is a fundamental ingredient to a strong democracy and to censor this persons comment, does all of us a disservice.
Besides, I recall reading some of weshallremain’s posts, in the past and they tend to be insightful, thought-provoking and well laid out.

Although I think you could tone it down with the caps (makes you seem like a nut), you are correct about infiltrations and provacatuers and people are easy to manipulate, very easy. It’s the primary reason that the anti-war movement has been in tatters since 92.
Personally, I doubt this guy is a one of them, but that’s not to say he wasn’t influenced by the same types. The provacatuers I met during the WTO riots were directing people to secret caches of molotov cocktails and things of that nature and nobody was buying it and those guys looked like they were born in a barracks and they were visibly upset by the fact that out of thousands of people, they could get not one person to engage in violence. Those protests were relatively successfull as well.

Imagine Mr Kostric and another random but unarmed guy in the crowd. They are both comfortable and confident -but when you remove the gun from the situation and you will see Kostric as someone who is submissive and frightened of the people around him.
If Kostric were to leave his gun at home he would feel naked and vulnerable. He is easily frightened by other people unless he has his gun with him for social protection -it’s a security blanket. If you watch the video there’s a point when someone standing near says something to him -his responding body language belies a basic submissive and slightly effeminate nature. He was doubtless picked on at school and/or at home for this submissiveness and he klings to weapons as a response. He could very well have been sexually abused as a child as well.
People who feel the need to carry a weapon do so because they are afraid of something -in this case the people around them. They should try to ween themselves from the gun and learn to be comfortable and confident without one -like most everybody else is.

the problem with strict constructionists is, the Constitution is often ambiguous, particularly in the modern world. Does the 2nd amendment grant everyone the right to bear arms or just those in a Regulated militia?
By “bear arms” did they mean arms that you could actually bear? The verb bear literally means “carry”. At the ratification of the Constitution, did bear mean “bear” as in arms you could literally carry [musket, pistol..] or did it mean possess any arms, even military arms (cannons at the time would be an example).
If the later is the case, should modern day military weapons be legal just because technology has allowed us to pack military grade lethality on a shoulder sling? Should we allow all arms to be covered by the 2nd amendment? 2 day waiting period on Stinger Missiles?
“Well regulated” in the 18th century context meant ‘well caliberated,’ as in ’skills well maintained,’ as in “well regulated weights and measures.” There’s actually no debate, other than the a push for manufactured consent of the anti-gun lobby.
Constitutional language is CLEAR. Please, look it up and verify for yourself. Even amongst honest “liberal” Constitutional lawyers’ circles, if they studied history, Black’s Law Dictionary, as well as Webster’s Dictionary, they would admit as much.
“MILITIA” is all able bodied men. We DID NOT have a true standing army until WWII. This is WHY we’re still being dickered around by the Military Industrial Complex. The notion that we do not need individuals armed because of the National Guard, who they want to define as the “militia,” is PURE propaganda. The National Guard is barely a century old; they did NOT exist then, though Continental State militia of various types were called up to put down various skirmishes prior to the American Revolution.
But, “shall not be infringed” has no other meaning. It “shall NOT be infringed” does not mean “reasonably regulated.” It means what it says, keep your hands the f*ck off. AND it’s the only part of the Constitution that specifies that it will NOT be meddled with; there are no other RIGHTS enumerated in the Constitution that specifies that it “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED,” other than in the 2nd. Also, it’s the only part of the Constitution that is EXPLICIT on “the RIGHT of the PEOPLE.”
Frankly, other than nukes and other weapons that cannot be individually portable, or directed against a single target, ie. multi directional explosives and bioweapons, ALL weapons should be allowed. Period. There’s your answer to the Stinger Missile question.
Please, read a few of Constitutional Attorney, Stephen Halbrook’s works. Even Jonathan Turley is of the same opinion, at least when it comes to an INDIVIDUAL “RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS.”
