AP analysis: Palin’s unexpected resignation stings her battered party
The governor certainly didn’t do her “battered” party any favors, according to the Associated Press’s Philip Elliott.
In an analysis, Elliott writes, “Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s abrupt and unscripted holiday resignation is an odd way to launch a potential presidential bid and certainly no help for a party battered by scandal and fighting for relevancy.”
Elliott notes, “Some party officials, including some once close to Palin, wondered whether she departed in advance of a brewing controversy, an assertion her camp denied. During the presidential campaign, McCain officials fretted about six or seven areas of personal and professional concern, according to a former official who helped investigate Palin’s background after her rocky rollout.”
“This official, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters, said the governor’s explanations for many subjects never fully passed muster, but the stretched-thin campaign was forced to accept them during the final march toward November,” Elliot adds.
At The New York Times, Adam Nagourney observes that “if some of her supporters are correct in surmising what she is doing — turning full time to preparing herself, after a tough year, for a presidential campaign in 2012 — it represents a huge gamble, even by the standards of a politician whose short career has been shaped by huge gambles.”
“By stepping down before finishing her term, she cannot claim to be even a one-term governor,” Nagourney continues. “Without a positive record of accomplishment as governor, Ms. Palin may find she has little to run on as she seeks to achieve a critical political goal: expanding her appeal beyond the conservative voters who crowd her rallies and write checks on her behalf.”
GOP strategist Ed Rollins told CNN that the “inept” move could cause many observers to be “suspicious” of the timing.

Maybe she’ll run for President of Russia. After all, she can “see” it from her doorstep, so she’s qualified, eh?
This lady is scary. She has an intense hatred for over half of americans and it shows..She loves arieal killing of wolves and their babies with the cutting off of the left foot for bounty..Got 35,000 you too can get a polar bear..Turkey killing in the back, thats fine. She would be a good grand wizard in georgia and southern states..She has that kind of hate.
I hope the palins grab their new AK47 that the nra gave them and unite with todd’s ol’ buddies from that right wing nut-job cabal and try to take on the USA—nothing better to see tanks spewing fire, melting that perma-frosted piece of shit-land and their ASSES floating in the Pacific Ocean like dirty-butted polar bears.
Mr. Crane. You really should take some time off from whatever stressful activity that you are engaged in and travel to Alaska. The permafrost lies further to the east and the polar bears are more fastidious than you imagine. As far as vaporizing or crystalizing the entire land mass and its occupants, reread your Einstein. I think you will find your suggested nuclear option unworkable.
“Some party officials, including some once close to Palin, wondered whether she departed in advance of a brewing controversy, an assertion her camp denied.
Well, OF COURSE they’re going to deny it! Geez, whadya think they would say, ” Oh yes, you caught me, yes, I really am resigning because the shit is about to hit the fan here is Wasilla”.
Look at the timing - right before the start of a long holiday weekend. I’m sure she thinks she’ll just cycle through the news and by Monday, people will be saying, “Sarah who?”
If not for the fact that this lunatic came way too close (for my liking) to being one heartbeat away from Presidency this would all be funny. She would fit in well in a Southern State or Florida, America’s other 3rd world neighbor. She would fit right in with the crackers, hill and squid billies who would welcome her and her dysfunctional family with open arms and proclamations of ‘Family’. All I want for the 4th of July is for this skank to slip into the ‘weird political happenings’ section and never be considered for Public Office again, ever!
Ummm…didn’t Mark Sanford just admit to having “crossed the line” with numerous other women? Wasn’t he the head of the Republican Governor’s Association? Of which Ms. Palin was surely an active member.
For the love of god I hope you’re insinuations are on target.
your***** ugh. edit button, please.
“…wondered whether she departed in advance of a brewing controversy, an assertion her camp denied. ” Which obviously means that it is, as a matter of fact, in advance of a brewing controversy.
A “brewing controversy” in Alaska is a quality of life issue regarding the temperature and flavor of beer. You have to remember that the winters there are very long and VERY dark.
She never thought her shenanigans would be uncovered. In fact, she barely had the awareness to realize what she was doing could be uncovered as a crime. She is stupid and criminality she rationalizes away. She should serve at least 10 years in prison for crimes she has committed but probably never will. At least maybe, she will be in for the fight of her life as the feds are breathing down her neck. How dare she rob the people of Wasilla with her ridiculous sports complex scheme. Fiscal conservative, my a**.
Corruption!
WOW!
kc27……….was there a “threesome” going on? Awesome……..
Well, I think it’s pretty obvious there’s an indictment headed Palin’s way and it probably has something to do with the building contractor, Spenard Builder’s Supply. Otherwise, why did she SUDDENLY (even her own family was caught by surprise) decide to resign as governor, when she could have simply stated her intention not to run for re-election? I can think of no other time that a politician has suddenly resigned that it wasn’t because they found themselves faced with serious legal problems. And her so-called reason for resigning is because she no longer wants a political career is just an attempt to somehow save face because she knows her political career is OVER and OUT.
I feel the opposite is true. Her resignation is the kindest thing shoe could do for the Republican Party. HOw is remocing one of its biggest embarrassments a sting? If I were RNC chairman, I would be bereathing one big sigh of relief right now.
Unless, of course, she plans to run for some (any!) other office in the future. And even then, she’d have to run as a Republican, and THAT assumes the Republican Party would nominate her for anything other than dog catcher in Nome.
Make that “removing,” not “remocing.” Type at haste, proofread at leisure.
For a political party that appesrs to be so “torture happy” about everyone who isn’t one of them, why do they act like such “victims” when their “feelings get hurt?” This was all self inflicted by them from day one in 2001 when neocon mass insanity reared its ugly head.
Too bad, so sad…
Palin should have known when to shut her trap a long time ago, but longwindedness apparently is a Republican family trait, and she’s obviously doing them proud.
