Oklahoma Rep’s ‘proclamation’ blames gays, porn, abortion for economic woes

Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern, probably best known for her comparison of homosexuality to toe cancer, has ignited controversy once again with her “Oklahoma Citizen’s Proclamation for Morality,” a document that blames America’s current economic crisis on “our greater national moral crisis.”
The document (PDF) blames “abortion, pornography, same sex marriage, sex trafficking, divorce, illegitimate births, child abuse and many other forms of debauchery” for the country’s economic woes.
To rectify the problem, it suggests the following solution: “BE IT RESOLVED that we, the undersigned, humbly call upon Holy God, our Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer, to have mercy on this nation, to stay His hand of judgment, and grant a national awakening of righteousness and Christian renewal as we repent of our great sin.”
Though Kern’s proclamation reads like a latter-day version of a tribal appeal to the gods for rain, it is being taken very seriously, especially among gay-rights groups.
“Instead of dealing with issues that she ought to be dealing with, it seems she’s advocating her religious views once again, which is not the proper purview of an elected official,” Scott Jones, a gay pastor, told Oklahoma City’s News 9.
Jones added that he didn’t think the timing of the document — the week after Pride Sunday and the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots — was a coincidence.
“I think it’s a response to this celebration,” Jones said.
He said the real moral issues are about poverty, hunger, the cost of health insurance and environmental degradation — “Representative Kern, a public official doesn’t address any of these moral issues.”
The proclamation implicitly blames President Barack Obama for the economic crisis — or at least sees his policies as contributing to the problem.
The document says the undersigned are “grieved that the Office of the president of these United States has refused to uphold the long held tradition of past presidents in giving recognition to our National Day of Prayer.”
The undersigned are also “deeply disturbed that the Office of the president of these United States disregards the biblical admonitions to live clean and pure lives by proclaiming an entire month to an immoral behavior” — referring to the Obama administration’s support of gay pride events this month.
News 9 states that “Kern, and a host of other lawmakers, civic and religious leaders, will gather at the State Capitol next month to sign” the proclamation.

This woman is not only a loon, but she is a fucking HYPOCRITE, too, as defined by the words of Christ. He specifically said to NOT go praying in public, he specifically said NOT to wear your religion on your sleeve, but to LIVE BY EXAMPLE. She is an example alright: An example of exactly what Christ said NOT to be.
This woman is clearly mentally unbalanced. So the economic crisis was caused by things and people completely UNRELATED to it? All those gays wanting to be left alone to live their own lives without being worried about being beaten to death for who they loved forced all those investment bankers to pull unethical trades that collapsed the economy? All that porn made the congress pass deregulation that has destroyed our ability to sustain an economy? All those aborted babies would have kept us from allowing the financial sector to be run by the most greedy among us?
She has proved before that she is a loon, it’s time that even those in OK realized it and sent her if not home, then to the place she belongs, a privately funded insane asylum.
You go ahead, ma’am, and pray to whatever invisible God you want to. And while you’re wasting time doing that, the rest of us will try and pick up the pieces of what is left since YOU had control of this country. And remember, the words of Aesop, who said that the Gods help those who help themselves. You aren’t eh answer to anything, you are the goddamned problem. HYPOCRITE!

Unbelievable. Where do these nut jobs come from? How self-righteous and bigoted can you get? I had business dealings with one of those evangelical groups (posing as nonprofits) that infest Colorado Springs some time ago. They explained to me that, since they were truly saved (just ask them!), everything they did was righteous, by definition. I heard the same poisonous nonsense last week from the Iranian mullahs (if you protest against us, you are against God, and therefore we should kill you.) Oklahoma, please don’t embarrass yourselves and put this poor woman somewhere she can’t hurt herself or others.

The majority of Oklahomans in her district voted for her. This is a common sentiment and a common form of fearful magical thinking, normally not seen much after the 1700’s in the Western world, except Oklahoma.
I lived there. I don’t see how they get away with it. They intentionally make the place uninhabitable. Must be the farm subsidies. Seriously, some guy I worked with told me about Peanut farmers in Oklahoma who were paid subsidies to NOT GROW peanuts but then grew them anyways because no one ever comes to check.

Its funny how she left out an unregulated financial derivatives market, the export of most US manufacturing jobs, and ever-rising government and private debt out of the equation - and prefers to scapegoat things that have nothing to do with the economy! They see or hear this woman and she is an elected official saying this stuff and not knowing what really happened, strengthens the notion that americans as a whole are ignorant stupid and lazy. We allow people like this to sway political opinion as though it’s emperical evidence. A friend of mine said to me that it almost seems as if you americans relish being ignorant. I told him no we didn’t etc. etc., but then later on I did a little thinking and he may be right. It almost seems as if they just want us to go to church watch “family oriented shows” and praise everything the state and federal govt. does. In essence a populace that has been dumbed down and easy to control.
When the hammer comes down on our country (the dollar will implode), the majority of Americans would have been so indoctrinated into thinking the bad things happen to “those people” they will go nuts. They will be faced with the reality that they have ignored for decades.

However, it is important to both acknowledge our sin and change our course before we ask to be forgiven for it.
A sin I don’t see mentioned is our murderous soft colonialism. I also see allowing the rich and powerful to trample the welfare and future prosperity of generations of Americans. That seems sinful. How about the corruption and the lying in our Congress? They have aided and abetted torture and murder.. Surely that’s a sin. How about supplying the weapons of oppression on Palestine? We’re clearly a party to that sin. A major enabler, actually. It’s fair to say it wouldn’t continue without our sanction.
How about we also repent of those sins?

I do not think that this woman realizes that time changes. People and countries evolve. After all, when this quote she used was written, women did not have any rights at all. Well… other than the rights her husband or father allowed her. Woman were not even allowed to vote for almost 90 years after this was written.
