Local police say racist fliers on black homeowners’ doorsteps is protected speech, though “possibly” littering
A collection of black homeowners in a Tennessee town are upset and fearful after the Ku Klux Klan targeted their neighborhood with hate-filled fliers, dropped on their lawns in the dead of night.
The fliers call for whites to secure the future for “white, Christian children,” denounce interracial marriage and homosexuality, along with calling for an end to “white discrimination.”
Complaints to the police in Greeneville, Tennessee did not help. In an interview with local news channel WJHL, Greenville police officer Terry Webb said that the fliers, perceived by residents to be threatening in nature, “possibly” rise to the criminal level of littering. However, he claimed, it’s their First Amendment right to advertise racially-motivated hatred on a person’s doorstep.
“The Devil is busy and (the KKK) talk about being Christians, how can you say you’re a Christian displaying all this hatred,” homeowner Leroy Ripley told the station.
“Littering, are you kidding me?” jeered CNN’s Kyra Philips during a Thursday segment. “Here we are in 2009. We have a black president, gay leaders, successful interracial marriages. We have come a long way, folks. Still, in this country, you can spew hate, make innocent black residents fearful to come out their doors and all these punks get busted for is littering.”

Actually I have and both Rush Lushbaugh (remember Half-frican american in talking about Obama) and Ann Coulter (Calling people in africa cannibals etc. etc.) have said things that was tinged if not blackened with Hatred and intolerance. Natty, you and me and even Shag11 are intelligent people. We wouldn’t go out and attack or disenfranchise blacks or hispanics or whomever on what they say on the radio or on television. But there are many people out their who are mentally and emotionally unstable and would think that by them saying certain things or doing certain things it gives them a greenlight to attack these groups. Because in their mind that would solve injustices they feel was done to them by minorities, or what their church told them people of color are. What these kids or individuals did was tantamount of a shot across the bough. Instead of a burning cross they hand out letter at night. Next time they may shoot up a persons house in order to scare them off.
And as for the legacy of slavery, I agree with you. Many pundits think that with slavery was over a hundred years ago and segregation ending in 1971 and this being 2009, blacks had ample time to pull themselves up by their “bootstraps” and fixed their communities and such. Imagine if you will that we as men or if your a woman having another race in the majority having white in slavery, raping our women without no repurcussions in front of the mans face, and demasculating us white men by knowing not only cant we defend ourselves or our families from persecution. But we don’t have anywhere to go to find justice. In fact we are demasculated so much that our women our the only ones that can earn a good living or if possible go to school, because the other races people don’t consider her a threat to their women or their power structure. And this was going on for over centuries.
And then all of a sudden in 1970 or 71 everybody was supposed to accept whites as equals to the race that is in majority and we are supposed to forget the trauma that was done to us and our parents and parents parents over the decades and centuries. What this does to a race (I used whites in lew of blacks) if to traumatize generations of people to the point that they feel inadequate or unworthy. And at the same time don’t feel apart of this country that they never repeat never was able to access to make a society for themselves. The Irish, the Italians the Germans etc. etc., came here and was also discriminated against. Heck, I remember my grandmother talking about how even back in the 30’s how the treated people with Irish names. But we weren’t enslaved for centuries in this country and brutalized to the point that we hate our own kind.
As for Blacks being racists, yep they can be. They can be just as racists to a white and vice versa, but it doesn’t make it any less wrong. A bigot is a bigot irregardless of his skin color. Oh, by the way about Katrina and the Lower 9th Ward. yea people where acting crazy and doing things like stealing and robbing and actually killing, but it wasn’t just blacks. It was whites acting as vigilantes going after any black that wasn’t armed, there was cops shooting at people (especially of color) that they deemed was doing something wrong, there was also the people having the money to even leave the area because they where dirt poor. And one last note, when people started to leave from the Lower 9th and other places that where hit they where stopped on more than one bridge by the communities on the other side police (which where majority white) and told/threatened to not come over because they thought those people would steal and do whatever. And you knew that was racism when the cops would only allow the older white guy ( this actually happened in an interview on MSNBC about katrina) to approach them and explain the situation.
Where a society that has lived in a system of intolerance and hatred for not only other groups but each other. Our decendants are going to look back a hundred years from know and say “you fools, you had all this potential but you wasted it on which tribe would be on top”, and this will be said while we are digging ourselves out of the problems and issues and economic policies of this era that turned the US into a third world country. Tribalism can be racism, and racism can be tribal. And in order to stop we have to sit down and say that the rest of humanity that doesn’t or does look like us is our brother and sister.

Why complain to the police? The KKK has declared war on all minorities and any white seen as a “sympathizer,” and no amount of complaints has had any effect. They (the kkk) speak of violence as a necessary means to an end and have murdered tens of thousands of blacks, Jews, Mexicans, gays, and more since their inception in support of this agenda and have vowed that it will continue until they get what they want. Anything anyone does to them is an act of self-defense pure and simple, even if seemingly unprovoked.

My point is when ever the left or right need to pass a Bill things happen, just like they were intentional. Just before the gun ban Bill went to the floor some idiot shoots up the Holocaust Museum. When the necessity of Homeland Security comes to question a band of low level retards that couldn’t even tie their own shoes get busted for terrorism and the media plays the hell out of it. So whenever some crisis happens look to see what Bills are making it’s way to the Senate floor or you can just keep believing whatever they tell you. Do your homework.

Is it possible that the rally was held in response to the proposed bill? Like rallies are held in response to wars, abortion legislation, gay marriage laws, tax tea parties, etc.?
I’m not saying you’re wrong, but rallies generally happen because something else happened or is happening that a group of people don’t agree with.
If you’re suggesting that the powers-that-be have orchestrated this rally to muster up support for a bill that would otherwise have received wide support anyway, that borders on conspiracy theory, and without providing examples of past practice, they are just words.
I wonder why it is we have to pass these kind of laws giving minorities more right than the rest of americans. When a man strikes another man in anger or hatred, isn’t that the same no matter the color of their skin? If anything that bill furthers racism by making one person better than the other simply because they happened to be born african-american, or they are gay, or handicapped. What happened to all men created equal? Are we all not equal anyomore?

Lotta blacks look at gays the way the KKK looks at blacks, so blacks are not faultless, but the law should not allow hate to be delivered to your neighbor’s door.

I’m willing to bet my next two years salary, as well as my retirement fund, that had the fliers been distributed in a white neighborhood by African-Americans, Hispanics, or Muslims, you’d bet your ASS the bohunk police in Tennessee would be singing a different tune. Ignorance is alive and well in Tennessee.
Just to correct a few things. The Greeneville Police Department DID NOT charge the KKK for littering. They had an opportunity to file over a dozen incidents of littering to the PO Box that was on the flyers. It is evident that they are one sided on their supposed mission to protect their citizens. These citizens just happened to be on the wrong side of town. Who is Terry Webb? Is this an alias for the real chief of police? If so, this reveals another issue with the local law enforcement agency and the local news reporting.
Also, we are not afraid of the KKK.
If they think that they can still do what they did many years ago they are in for a rude awakening. If they continue to come for harrassment and intimidation in the late night and early morning hours, trust me, they will get caught. Are you ready for the consequences?? You had better be.
