S.C. GOPer: Gorilla ‘one of Michelle’s ancestors’

A high-ranking South Carolina Republican activist has issued an apology after comparing First Lady Michelle Obama to a gorilla.
Rusty DePass, a former chairman of the Richland County Republican Party, made the comments in a friend’s Facebook status update line after a gorilla was reported to have escaped from Columbia’s Riverbanks Zoo.
According to FitsNews, the status line read: “I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors — probably harmless.”
DePass told the Associated Press that he made the comment in reference to President Barack Obama’s views on evolution.

We’re all for First Amendment freedoms and politically incorrect remarks around here, but this strikes even our most indelicate of sensibilities as out of bounds.
And while we will defend DePass’ right to make such a comment, it’s insanely racist - sort of like the anti-Obama flyer found on S.C. Rep. Bill Sandifer’s desk last year.
That was in reference to a controversy last year in which a South Carolina state House Representative was caught with a flyer claiming that Obama had promised a job to all black Americans, but that those black Americans were too lazy to actually want the jobs.

And to think that some wonder why the Republican Party is rapidly becoming a southern regional party. As a Southerner, myself, I hate it that the rest of the world thinks of us as having a view similar to this South Carolina buffoon, but as they seem to delight in making as much noise as they can, and get echoed constantly by Fox Noise and National Hate Radio, I understand why it is so.

Bush is not a Texan, he just lived here off and on in order to establish residency . . . as for our current Gov. Goodhair, 61% of the voters voted AGAINST him in the last election. Isn’t there [or wasn't there] a case in front of the Supreme Court about extending a requirement for several southern states to prove to the feds that any changes in their voting laws would not limit anyone’s right to vote?
John Roberts was asking if it was really still necessary to extend the requirement, after all, the Voting Rights Act was years ago and the isn’t any reason to think that people in the south are still prejudiced.

For those of you who wish this trash on us, please, while part of Texas, particularly the West and a slice of East Texas are characterized by this attitude, central Texas and South Texas have entered the 21st century. At the rate things have been going, in two more election cycles we’ll have taken control of the Republic and can start repairing the damage that Gov. Shrub and Gov. Goodhair have done. I will agree with your statement about East Texas because East Texas is still a part of the Deep South. My daughter lives in East Texas [almost in Louisiana] and was remarking just last weekend how it was a whole different world from where she grew up.
I don’t know about all of the regional variations in Texas, I do have relatives in Paige, a small town east of Austin I guess central Texas, and what I have gathered from them is that Republicans rule in Texas. I have doubts that Soth Texas where most of the population seems to be located is far into the 21st century disn’t they elect Bush twice and Goodhair at least once? When Texas elects some people who are intelligent never mind the party I will have more faith in them. I was particularly struck by Goodhair saying basically The Texans are the most patriotic Americans,far more so than any other Americans and we just can’t wait to secceed.

I go to Charleston every New Year’s eve for a special gathering. It’s Stephen Colbert’s home town, and he has attended, too. The outlying areas are pretty primitive, but the city itself has a lot of progressives, much as that might surprise some. Phil Lader, Clinton’s ambassador to the UK, lives there, too.
