Graham, Lieberman threaten Senate shut down over abuse photo bill

In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Joe Lieberman (I-C.T.) threatened to shut down the Senate by blocking any further legislation unless their bill preventing the release of any further detainee abuse photos is passed.
Both men said they fear more disclosure would trigger heightened violence against Americans overseas.
“Both Senators said they were alarmed that a House-Senate conference committee on the supplemental war spending bill appears poised to eliminate language — inserted by the two Senators — that would block public disclosure of detainee abuse photos,” reported Roll Call. “The $90-billion-plus bill has been held up, in part, because House Democratic leaders have said they do not have the votes to pass it with the detainee photo provision included, because many liberal lawmakers have balked at the language.”
Politico’s Glenn Thrush noted: “House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who initially said she’d support the amendment, which was also pushed by Connecticut Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman, now thinks it’s ‘likely’ the measure will be stripped in a conference committee.”
“The question over the release of the photos is one of two key issues that is jamming up final consideration of a major, emergency spending bill to fund the war in Iraq, efforts in Pakistan and Afghanistan and prepare for the H1N1 flu,” reported Fox.
Huffington Post reported Monday night: “People can’t believe that this is a reality, a possible reality that the detainee photos amendment will be taken out of the bill,” Graham said, shortly before The Huffington Post confirmed that it was. He and Lieberman are determined to vote against the war supplemental without the photos amendment. “And,” he said “I think we’ll carry a lot of people with us.”
The Congressional war supplemental also contains a $108 billion infusion for the International Monetary Fund, which would act like a credit line for the IMF in case member countries need emergency loans that exceed the institution’s resources. As such, the money is not considered an immediate budget expense.

Graham and Lieberman are attempting to give to ANY president, the ability to cover up evidence of past crimes of “former” presidents. I can assume, that this can be extended to a sitting president’s ability to order that his crimes be covered up, also.
Neither men are true patriots and neither are upholding their Oath of Office when in turn, they choose to hand over to a man, what they are responsible for. If this is to be the case, then what are these two men good for anyway? They’ve all but stopped short of proclaiming the president, King!

Lieberman and Graham are right to demand the photos not be released. Americans would see the horror we’ve allowed to be done to innocent men/woman/children. It’s best to hide the truth and keep letting Americans think we’rve better then others and don’t do evil things. Christians can still comment on bible phases to show we’re following God and we can condemn others. It would shock the image of the US if we were shown how the CIA tortured woman and children. America does well hiding the evil pass as we did during the murders of Indians, Slavery and the Civil Rights. History tells the story but Americans choose not to read it, as it’s better to believe the lie. Even now cartoons on the Christian Channel shows slaves coming over smiling and getting apartments and jobs. Yes it was so good to see our kids are taught our country was founded with no hate or racism. Even the stories of our America treated the Indians by never showing the murder only the peaceful dinners and love spread around. Yes few still remember how the KKK took blacks and hung them from trees as entertainment, raped woman/girls/boys and burning people in their homes. Yes some like myself are still alive to remember seeing that but soon the stories will be lost. It makes you wonder what is so terrible in those photos that the U.S. Senate feels it needs to pass a law banning their publication. Isn’t hiding a crime and accessory to that crime? For as much as I think LIEberman and Graham are tools, I agree that releasing the photos will do us no favors.
There is ample evidence out there of what Bush and his cabal of criminals have done in our name; we are all fully aware what they did, and what they were capable of doing. Releasing the photos will only serve to further inflame those few militants to seek more recruits. With things worsening in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and with those peoples standing up to the Taliban and Al Qaeda, the last thing we need is for the people to start turning their backs on us … again.
That said, I keep holding out hope that the DOJ will investigate, indict and prosecute Bush and his cabal of criminals.

Well, i will agree that maybe the pics should not be released to the public, however I do think they should be released to a special procecutor and that should be soon. There is enough evidence out there now to put these people responsible in court. We had less than this against Gotti and Capone yet went after their ass and got them.

The really telling thing about this “bill” is the strict limitations on when the photos were taken. If they were truly serious, there would be a date…let alone putting a date that starts with September 11, 2001 and ending two days into Obama’s term as President. THAT is the real story about this.

I’m unclear as to their tactics of “shutting down the Senate”. Would someone explain how they can do that? And if they block legislation, don’t they think the American people might have something to say about that? Lieberman and Graham forget who their bosses really are.
