Journalist claims papers turned down story about Bush’s desire to invade Iraq
An investigative journalist who authored a controversial book on the Bush dynasty says he approached major US newspapers about publishing a story before the 2004 election regarding George W. Bush’s alleged intent to invade Iraq prior to becoming president, but was rebuffed.
The journalist and author, Russ Baker, says he had a taped interview of Bush’s onetime biographer in which he says Bush told him he intended to invade Iraq as early as 1999, during his presidential campaign. The interview with former Bush ghostwriter Mickey Herskowitz took place before the 2004 election.
Baker eventually published his story online in October of 2004. In it, Herskowitz is quoted as saying, “He was thinking about invading Iraq in 1999. It was on his mind. He said to me: ‘One of the keys to being seen as a great leader is to be seen as a commander-in-chief.’ And he said, ‘My father had all this political capital built up when he drove the Iraqis out of Kuwait and he wasted it.’ He said, ‘If I have a chance to invade·.if I had that much capital, I’m not going to waste it.”
The Bush campaign parted ways with Herskowitz during his 2000 campaign for president and replaced him with campaign adviser Karen Hughes. Herskowitz was a sports writer in Houston and co-authored a book while Bush was governor of Texas in 1993.
In a column published Tuesday, Baker is quoted as saying that his story was turned down by The Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post.
Baker described the Post as “scared because of the Dan Rather thing, and they said to me, ‘What do you have in the way of evidence?’”
The author says he replied, “‘Here’s a tape of Mickey Herskowitz, who’s published 20-some books, long-time journalist of the Houston Chronicle, friend of the Bush family, telling me this story.”
He says a Post editor said, “It’s not enough. In this climate, we need Bush on tape saying this.”
A representative of the Post could not immediately be reached for comment.
In his 2004 story, Baker wrote: “That President Bush and his advisers had Iraq on their minds long before weapons inspectors had finished their work - and long before alleged Iraqi ties with terrorists became a central rationale for war - has been raised elsewhere, including in a book based on recollections of former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill. However, Herskowitz was in a unique position to hear Bush’s unguarded and unfiltered views on Iraq, war and other matters - well before he became president,” as Bush’s ghostwriter.
Baker’s recent book on the Bush family received mixed reviews. A Los Angeles Times review called the book “preposterous;” Time Magazine called Baker “prodigiously industrious” but one of his conclusions “far-fetched.”
Jim Moore, author of “Bush’s Brain,” however, gave Baker glowing praise.
“Baker is independent and unafraid, two characteristics needed for unfettered journalism, and he has been relentless in pursuing the damning details that other reporters have either misunderstood or ignored,” Moore wrote. “Baker’s investigation into the Bush family and its self-serving influence over American policy is profoundly disturbing and immediately important as the spinners try to reframe the disaster of George W. Bush’s tenure in the White House. As an investigator and as a writer of compelling narrative, Baker has created, in my estimation, an almost unequaled standard in political reportage.”
“”The big story is simply the cumulative sense, based on hundreds and hundreds of fresh facts, of the extent to which elites write our history,” Baker remarked in an online interview about his book. “And the realization that, as we flee the Bush years, we remain utterly in the dark about so much.”

…and then 9/11 happened! The convenient excuse to do what he said he wanted to do! How lucky!
My thoughts exactly bigdan.
If dubya was willing to sacrifice the lives of our military just to make himself look like a “successful” president then why wouldn’t he be capable of setting up 911 to try and make himself into a hero by going to war in retaliation? A pseudo retaliation that is…The search for Bin Laden was short lived and quickly changed focus to invading Iraq. This is very disturbing.
Three shots in between the eyes at 10 paces and it’s called friendly fire! Pat Tillman was going to come out against the wars and told his brother that the war in Afghanistan was for the most part staged for the consumption of the folks at home!
I had been passing the link to the story to everyone I could think of (Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, etc.), as well as posting it on every message board I could find.
Due to the fact that he has the blood of 3,000-plus innocent people on his hands in order to outdo “Daddy” regarding Iraq, I’d like to see him hung. Instead Cheney is on a media tour ADMITTING to much of this stuff, and once again, the media and the Department of Justice are just snoozing through it.
What is this country REALLY trying to accomplish here? Will any of us ever know?
Thank God Russ Baker is finally getting some press about this! If you haven’t done so already, read his book about the Bush family, “Family of Lies”. As a reader I found it excellent, heavily footnoted, researched and documented. Makes a great gift for the rightie on your list
Appreciate the comments. While “Family of Lies” might have been a good title, I would like to point out that the book is actually called “Family of Secrets.”
It would seem to me that the way the U.S. went about laying seige to Iraq and Bagdhad had as much to do with the invasion of Iraq as 9/11. 9/11 made a great pretext for invasion, sort of, well, maybe not, but without the actions of H.W. and Clinton in the years previous to the invasion, it wouldn’t have been possible to occupy bagdhad.
Bush’s fixation on invading Iraq ahs already been confirmed by former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill, who said it was all Bush wanted to talk about at the first WH meeting in Jan/Feb 2001, and Richard Clarke has also confirmed Bush’s insane desire to top his doddering fool of an old man by conquering Baghdad.
The very people we put our trust in our govt. republicans dems, military and media who are supposed to protect us did this to us ,iraqs and afganistan.Sadamn was hanged for doing the same thing as bush and company..Sad thing is ,this corruption is deep and will happen again if not is investigated..Many are guilty of crimes, but we are responsible if we are silent.
Old news RAWstory…

Catch up with the movement… we’ve been waiting.

Old News Indeed: In 1999, Bush Craved Opportunity to Attack Iraq
By GARY LEUPP
If Bush could find “capital” in the tainted election of 2000, in which he lost the popular vote, then surely he could find it in the 9-11 tragedy too. That gave him the “chance to invade” he’d told Herskowitz he wouldn’t waste. He’s gotten most everything he wanted to get passed so far, most notably the PATRIOT Act. That’s the great leader’s style.
One wants to fault Herskowitz for keeping this conversation with Bush (which must have happened before May 1999) under wraps all this time until sharing it with independent journalist Russ Baker in the last few days. But he’s a Bush family friend, after all. That makes the statement even more damning.

Good point Gary
Even better that you made it BACK in 2005!
Oh that’s right…the democrats are in charge and so now it safe to blame George and Dick…
(Does anyone vaguely remember watching a YT segment where Bush was on the Today show mumbling so crap about taking care of Saddam and Iraq while on the campaign trail for the 2000 elections?)
I didn’t see that, but I would assume the Today Show has archives of videotape. Why in the hell don’t they bring them out?
What does the democrats being in charge have to do with Bush’s saying he’d attack Iraq if he ever had the chance? Weren’t the Republicans in charge then?
Sounds like a L-O-T of premeditated murder to me.
And, don’t forget, the discovery of ‘NANO’-Thermate in the dust with molten drops of metal. (And, please TROLLS, don’t give me the bullsh*t about how ‘THERMITE’ is produced naturally from the welding process. Yes, it is. But, the ONLY place in the world that ‘NANO-Thermate’ is produced is in the most sophisticated MILITARY laboratories in the the U. S. A.! Sort of like the Anthrax used in the ‘anthrax attacks’, that came from Fort Detrick military laboratory in Maryland. Hmmmm. Kind of makes you think, doesn’t it?
9/11 was an inside job!
I don’t believe for a second that GW Bush is capable of unique thought. He’s a parrot.
This idea was likely planted in his head by Cheney and Rove, et al, while they were selecting him as their candidate. They had a job to do for their oil buddies and he was their guy. There was a conspiracy to commandeer the US govt and military to achieve corporate goals.
Imagine how it rang with GW to be told he had an opportunity to be better than his father.
This was readily available news just after George W. Bush announced his candidacy for President in 1999. NOW everyone is going to act like they didn’t know? Yeah, and the sun don’t rise in the east every morning. Sure. Uh, huh. Right. You betcha. Facts is facts. Unless you is willfully stupid, dumb, blind and ignorant. Yeah.
It’s no wonder the print media are in decline. Since newspapers decided to tow the line and carry the water for the ideology of the last administration, most people have realized print news coverage is incomplete, irrelevant, biased and unreliable source about the truth.
I will ever be convinced the minute that scumbag coward Bush took office he already had the invasion half planned.
Americans are so dumbed down and careless. The government’s power derives from our ignorance. We are getting what we deserve.
Speaking of things that weren’t getting published in the MSM Sibel Edmonds has a new blog and a new project. Project Expose MSM. The first major installment was today regarding Michael Isikoff. Check it out.

“Alleged” was the most common word spoken and written regarding Bill Clinton during his public trial by news media. They took anybody’s conspiracy theory and ran it. But with GW Bush, they needed a tape recorded confession! I wonder what standard of evidence they’ll apply to Obama?
Well, duh! It goes like this…President (D) media excoriates and runs every projectile thrown by the Rove-trained and Faux-fed rumor that gets whispered. Then, in an effort to correct themselves and not give any appearance of being the “Liberal media” and to maintain their “access”, they accept anything and everything the President (R) Administration utters.
Oh…and a tape recorded confession by Bush/Cheney would have had a thorough analysis by the Federalist Society why the President (R) had not committed any crime because he wasn’t under oath during the confession, and even then he was Constitutionally within the boundaries of the law through Unitary Executive powers of the President (R).
Doesn’t this confirm the conspiracy theory about the Twin Towers?
Sometimes I forget how fortunate we are not to even have to look at his creepy, inbred face anymore and then I started scrolling down this story. No suprise he wanted to invade a country, spens billions and kill millions all for a political notch on his pistola. Naw, no other reason really, just needed some political points so people would see him as the commander-in-chief. Honestly, when are we going to start giving candidates MMPI’s? Even school bus drivers have to pass more rigorous standards than the leader of the free world.
Weren’t you fucking morons.. You douchebags.. You fucking idiots listening to the Michigan primary?
He proved himself RIGHT THERE! For heaven’s sakes, Gary Bauer caused a meltdown with a couple of questions. And it wasn’t reported ANYWHERE!
Fuck.. What good is the First Amendment when the press if BOUGHT OFF?
YOU SUCK.
That “review” of Baker’s book in the LA Times is a vicious hatchet job, likely by a member of the “Mighty Wurlitzer.” The NY Times is no better. Last year a book came out that described in formidable detail the plot to kill Martin Luther King (It was largely CIA people–surprise!). If I hadn’t seen it, I would never have known it was published (by Philip H. Melanson, Ph.D). It’s brilliant and apparently irrefutable–so it’s been ignored. Baker’s too well known to ignore, so he’s slandered or damned with faint praise.
One of the very few good things of the past eight years is that the corruption and co-optation of the US corporate media has been made so obvious, and that’s largely why it’s collapsing.
I highly recommend that everyone reads this book. “Family of Secrets” The Bush Dynasty the powerful forces that put it into the Whitehouse, and what their influence means for America.
Russ Baker, should win the pulitzer prize for his courageous effort to inform the world of this heinous families history. Every item is fact checked and documents cross-referenced. I’m reading it now and I’m so angry that from World War II to today, these ass-holes have hijacked the American political, intelligence and corporate interest with no hint of concern.
Thousands of people have been murdered solely for family greed and monetary gain. Every American needs to read this book, and then you should write your Congressman and demand a special prosecutor to investigate and charge this family with the most stringent criminal charges available. They’ve killed millions of Americans, Presidents, and hijacked foreign governments without compunction.
This book should be #1 on the Best sellers list for at least the next year.

only a fool wouldn’t have seen it coming! dubya opened campaign 2000 with $100, 000, 000 in the war chest, somebody was looking for a big return on all that money, and gee, ‘H’ just happened to have a special interest in Carlyle, and some of the justices on the Supreme Court owned stock in the military complex, it was all falling neatly into place, war was inevitable.

I can’t believe it took this long for this story to be revisited.
In typical Bush style, after Bush’s handlers didn’t want long-time family friend, Mickey Herskowitz, they could just let him go — they had to slander this well-respected writer, as well.
“Reporters covering Bush say that when they inquired as to why Herskowitz was no longer on the project, Hughes intimated that Herskowitz had personal habits that interfered with his writing - a claim Herskowitz said is unfounded. Later, the campaign put out the word that Herskowitz had been removed for missing a deadline. Hughes subsequently finished the book herself - it received largely critical reviews for its self-serving qualities and lack of spontaneity or introspection.”
The entire piece is a very interesting story, and I would highly recommend it. If you’re interested, the link is:

It is amazing that the media is so inept and does not really concern itself in doing its job.
Of course he said it. Read this letter to Clinton and then check out the names of the people who signed it- people Bush surrounded himself with. The sad part is there will be no trial for these individuals who promoted this policy.

“war was inevitable” said nagamaki.
Seems more true with every new revelation of the Bush-Cheney crimes.
They lied about WMD to Congress and our people to get permission to invade Iraq, a country that absolutely had nothing to do with 9-11.
