Carter disagrees with Obama on torture photo release
Former president apparently lends support for “Truth Commission” on prisoner abuse, says torture a crime “against our Constitution”
Former President Jimmy Carter, speaking to CNN on Monday, said he disagrees with President Barack Obama’s decision to withhold photos of prisoner abuse. He added that Obama appears to be resolved against resurrecting the past by punishing those in the Bush administration guilty of what Carter himself considers “crimes against our Constitution”
“I respect what his decisions are,” he told CNN’s Campbell Brown. “I don’t have the responsibility to deal with the consequences. But I think that most of his supporters were hoping he would be more open in the revelation of what we’ve done in the past.
“But, ah, he’s made a decision with which I really can’t contend, that he doesn’t want to resurrect the past. He doesn’t want to punish those that are guilty of perpetrating what I consider crimes against our own laws and against our constitution.”
Carter added that while releasing the images may cause “further animosity” toward the United States, the public knowledge that the photos simply exist already serves that cause, whereas instead of seeing them for what they are, the imagination can tend to fill in its own details.
And while Carter repeated several times that he will not criticize Obama for his decision, he did seem to lend support for the so-called “Truth Commission” that’s been discussed in the House and Senate.
Saying that “prosecution is too strong a word,” he added that what he would “like to see is a complete examination of what did happen, the identification of any perpetrators of crimes against our own laws or against international law,” said Carter. “And then after all that’s done, decide whether or not there should be any prosecutions.”
Brown’s interview with Carter will air on CNN, Monday night at 8 p.m. EST.

Well, ‘prosecution’ is not too strong of a word for me and many others. These criminals should be investigated, charged, tried and convicted of war crimes and (in my opinion) treason. Then, they should all spend the rest of their miserable fucking lives in a federal prison, at minimum.
Thank you, Jimmy Carter. Common sense such as yours is indeed a rare commodity.
Keep on talking Jimmy. He made a few mistakes, but he was the last good president. Then came the Great Unwinding of progress with the inaguration of the second worst president in history, Ronald Reagan, who began the decimation of regulation and the consequent economic catastrophe that now befalls us.
But please take it a step further Jimmy. It IS a crime against our Constitution. And that calls for one thing only:
A Special Prosecutor, with unlimited subpoena power, and a top secret security clearance.
Well, if Eric Holder conducts any *serious* investigations into these war crimes, it will implicate and incriminate the scum of the Earth millionaire politicians in congress who charade as “Dems” as well. (Most of them are really Repugs) That’s why messiah Obushma wants to “look forward and not in the past.”
Obushma is protecting the Bush Crime Family, as some of us thought he would. It was the Bush Crime Family who allowed messiah Obushma to take office in the first place. And the BCF is still in power, just under another name. The Obamabots/Dem kool-aid drinkers actually thought that the BCF was leaving in January! Ha! The loons. That certainly tells one how delusional, out-of-touch and wishful-thinking they are. If they hadn’t allowed themselves to fall for their messiah Obushma, we could have Nader or McKinney in the White House today. But no, the Dem kool-aid drinkers allowed themselves to fall for simplistic “hope” and “change we can believe in” marketing slogans. They had no interest in Obama’s Bush-accomplice voting record from the senate and when anyone brought it up, the Obamabots got furious and called one “troll” and “Republican operative.” Remember all that nonsense? It was too much for the pathetics. They only wanted “hope” and “change we can believe in.” Suckers. And you know, they will repeat the entire exercise all over again in 2012. They will whine, “well, I haven’t always agreed with what Obama has done and Obama may not be perfect, but he’s better than so and so (or I want to believe that) who has a R behind his name.”
And the cycle, RUT continues.
The saints are not going to run for office so stop demanding heaven on earth.
Carter has the wise ground on this issue. The you had to be there defense is bereft of logic.
“The saints are not going to run for office so stop demanding heaven on earth.”
——————————————
Where did you get that quote? From DemExcuseMakers.com?
No one is demanding “heaven on Earth,” idiot. What we are demanding is the prosecution and imprisonment FOR LIFE of despicable scum of the Earth international war criminals (both D and R), the reinstatement and honouring of the US Constitution and international law. It has nothing to do with simplistic “heaven on Earth” drivel.
Khalid Shaikh Mohammed has been called the “mastermind of 9/11.” By what standard was his confession verified and how closely does his confession match the narrative of the 9/11 Commission report? If we are following the rule of law then how do these to accounts compare? This seems to me to be the central issue and question regarding these prisoners..

Carter: “what I consider crimes against our own laws and against our constitution.”
Great! One of our former (and present) Democratic Presidents is able to read our Federal Law On Torture http://tinyurl.com/besdd3
and tell it like it is…
TORTURE Is a Federal Capital Crime
punishable by 20 years to life, and death if the prisoner dies of torture.
Similar penalties apply just for conspiracy to torture, which certainly happened. Bush, Cheney and their Lawyers were all in on it.
Just shows us what a cowardly wimp President Clinton was that he hasn’t spoken out in support of our Rule Of Law and Constitution. Most of we rank and file Democrats supported Clinton all through his impeachment and beyond.
This is how he rewards us. With his Silence.
If President Obama continues to Refuse To Enforce Our Federal Laws and Constitution
All will know that OBAMA IS SOFT ON CRIME
( for those committed by politicians).
But, I’ll bet he’d throw you and I in jail for a long time for violating Federal laws.
Obama apparently supports a double standard of Justice. One for you and I where we get prosecuted for all violations and another Justice for politicians where the Bush, Cheney and their appointee Lawyers are protected from prosecution of know crimes by Obama and his appointee Lawyers. Obama took an Oath promising to faithfully enforce our laws and protect our Constitution.
Make him do it.

“Prosecution is too strong a word.” Come on President Carter, was that true at Nuremburg? Why did we prosecute Timothy McVeigh? Why prosecute anyone for that matter. Without prosecution, there is no need for laws. The Romans & every civilization understood that. Even Jesus was prosecuted…
At this point, it’s the best shot we’ve got. The DOJ is filled with moles and Bushetals that need to be sniffed out and fired. Meanwhile, the Judicial Branch is stuffed to the brim with Judges from Rove selected Bush appointees, Clinton appointments (that were ‘compromise’ nominations with a Con-controlled Congress on a witch-hunt), and a few Poppy Bush appointees. And Congress…well, they fold at any mention of a filibuster or fight threat from the right-wing.
two things 1) Campbell Brown needs to show off her great legs, make it happen CNN
2) I am sure that the Bush fools will get prosecuted after Obama is reelected, sit back and enjoy the show
Yeah right, just like I’m sure you will be nominated and confirmed for the Supreme Court.
Considering the short attention span of the sheep, should messiah Obama be re-elected, very FEW people will even remember any of this stuff by that time (4 years ahead) so there would be no reason whatsoever for messiah to prosecute the Bush Crime Family…since his regime and the Bush-accomplice Dems have ZERO interest in doing that anyway. As I said previously, any serious investigations would implicate and incriminate the Bush-accomplice Dems as well. Many people have already forgotten about it. Some/many of the so-called “liberals”/”progressives” are not even paying attention to what the man is doing because they think they don’t have to simply because he’s a “Dem.” He’s from their “team” so they put blind faith in this War Criminal Obushma. I talked briefly with someone just like that yesterday. An Obamabot. Didn’t have a clue what he’s doing and when I mentioned a few things the excuses began to flow such as, “His hands are tied.” I started to ask: By whom? He and his pathetic party have the White House and his pathetic party has a majority in congress. Duh. But the Obamabots are still making excuses for him continuing the Bush agenda. Incredible! But if it were Bush physically in the White House doing these things, the Obamabots would be screaming about these things. But since it’s their lord and savior Obushma, they make excuses, apologies and justifications for his actions. Damn Hypocrites is what they are programmed with this “team” mentality.
Obama will not get re-elected if the Torture administration is still running around free.
In fact, if they are still running around there is a good chance he may be headed to an international court as well - for his knowledge of the torture…
Obama needs to keep his Base energized and right now he is spending too much time trying to court the money men and he has forgotten about the voters.
I blame everyone who did not Vote for Carter’s second term for all of the messes we are in…
Of course President Carter supports prosecuting war criminals! HE believes in law and order instead of this nasty neo-con anarchy we are STILL suffering under!!!
stardagger,
1) I don’t know what Campbell Browns legs look like but if they are indeed “great legs” then yes they should be shown.
2) Obama won’t win a second term if the war criminals are not prosecuted in his first. Sorry but it just isn’t very likely.
I would disagree with President Carter on one thing - the crimes of the bush regime were crimes against US Legal Code as well as the Constitution. And the Obama administration is NOW committing crimes against the Constitution by refusing to do their SWORN DUTY of prosecuting those crimes!
I agree with donotcall
“It IS a crime against our Constitution. And that calls for one thing only:
A Special Prosecutor, with unlimited subpoena power, and a top secret security clearance.”
Push Obama and Holder to do it.
