Ex-GOP congressman says Sotomayor part of ‘Latino KKK’

A retired California congressman attacked Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor on Thursday, equating her membership in a national civil rights group with — the KKK. Tom Tancredo, formerly a representative from California, has been a vociferous anti-immigration stalwart. From the CNN transcript:
TANCREDO: If you belong to an organization called La Raza, in this case, which is, from my point of view anyway, nothing more than a Latino — it’s a counterpart — a Latino KKK without the hoods or the nooses. If you belong to something like that in a way that’s going to convince me and a lot of other people that it’s got nothing to do with race. Even though the logo of La Raza is “All for the race. Nothing for the rest.” What does that tell you?
SANCHEZ: Alright. We’re not talking about — we’re not talking about La Raza —
TANCREDO: She’s a member! She’s a member of La Raza!
La Raza, meanwhile, fired back Thursday.
“He doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” National Council of La Raza spokesperson Lisa Navarrete said to The Colorado Independent. “He’s defamed our organization and told falsehoods about our organization without any basis in fact or evidence. That’s not who we are or what we do.
“If you look at Mr. Tancredos’ record, he’s often spoken about things he doesn’t know anything about.”

While I’ve never been a fan of Tancredo, I’ve given him the benefit of the doubt with respec to the illegal immigration issue, assuming he really had benign intent. However, listening to him over the last couple of weeks has convinced me that he is, at heart, a racist asshole. Plus he’s kind of dense.

La Raza has been racist from it’s inception. But as far as I know they have not “lynched” anyone, …….YET!
I am not defending La Raza; I’ve read enough about the group to know that they, at the very least, aim to ‘reconquer’ territory previously held by Mexico (as well as promote the interests of Hispanics). That is a separate question than my assessment of Tancredo. I still see him as a dimwitted racist asshole.
Not really an important detail, I suppose, but Tancredo is (unfortunately) the former representative of my COLORADO district (not California)

Just like right-wing evangelical neonazis are a member of the “rich man’s” America, and that group has shown its popularity by losing political race after face.
Rich, multimillionaire old white guys aren’t the only AMERICANS who populate this country.
Tom Tancredo long ago abandoned his integrity. Tom is the man who hates all things Latino. Glad to see him out of prison.
Does anyone ever research anything? There is a MAJOR difference between the benign La Raza and the hateful La Raza Unida!!!! La Raza is a group which helps with legal and socail issues within the Hispanic communities. That is the group Sotomeyer belongs to. NOT the group that advocates taking back US soil for Mexico and hating on whitey.
The more bloggers don’t do their homework, the more lies perpetrated by the GOP.
