In an appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America Wednesday, conservative pundit Ann Coulter reeled off a set of GOP talking points against Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor and stated that she believes “there should be” a filibuster of the nomination.

Coulter claimed that Sotomayor was guilty of a “racist statement” when she suggested in 2001 that “a wise Latina woman” might make better judgments in “race and sex discrimination cases” than a “white male who hasn’t lived that life.”

“It does a disservice to woman and minorities … by suggesting they do have a different way of deciding cases,” Coulter claimed.

Coulter also pooh-poohed Democrats’ emphasis on Sotomayor’s background of hard work and academic achievement, saying, “I’m not really interested in hearing their enthusiasm for an Hispanic now after blocking Miguel Estrada, who also had an impressive life story.”

“Why aren’t Democrats — why aren’t they choking up over Clarence Thomas or Miguel Estrada?” Coulter asked. “Why are we all supposed to weep only when it’s a liberal Hispanic or a liberal black?”

As one conservative blogger pointed out, Coulter was not the only one posing that question on Wednesday. Pat Buchanan and Joe Scarborough were also complaining about the media having ignored Clarence Thomas’s personal story on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

Estrada’s nomination to the Court of Appeals in 2001 was filibustered by Democrats who cited his out-of-the-mainstream views and lack of any prior judicial experience. They also expressed concerns that President Bush was simply trying to promote a highly conservative Hispanic attorney who might eventually be placed on the Supreme Court.
