Saddam Hussein complained of torture in letters to his interrogators and complained that his cell was a horrible place to spend his final days, according to documents obtained by James Meek of the New York Daily News.

The Daily News quoted the letters and printed a copy of one of them in its original Arabic. Hussein alleged beatings and of being kept where he was forced to endure the screams of others being tortured — thought to be at Baghdad International Airport. Meek notes that Hussein was accused of torturing and killing thousands himself during his 24-year reign.

“Not a single part of my body was spared of the severe harm that was inflicted by the detention gang,” Hussein wrote. “Some of the traces are still visible on my body.”

“My opportunity to sleep in this place is limited and almost scarce,” Hussein added. “I don’t think there is anyone with a sensitive and humanitarian heart who can sleep amidst the screams of the tortured and the many blows of the doors and the squeaking sounds of the chairs,” saying his “total hours of sleep did not exceed four to five hours.”
