Texas could secede from the union, governor says
A fired-up Texas Gov. Rick Perry told an Austin crowd gathered as part of the national “tea party” protests that while there was “no reason” to dissolve the union, “but if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that.”
His comment was made amidst shouts of “Secede!” — a word also a popular slogan on signs.
“Texas is a unique place,” Perry told the crowd, according to the Houston Star-Telegram. “When we came into the union in 1845, one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that.
“My hope is that America and Washington in particular pays attention,” he said. “We’ve got a great union. There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we’re a pretty independent lot to boot.”

Please, please do it! The average IQ of the United States would go up twenty points. Just send all that stimulus money back first, there, Governor Shitforbrains.
Please. Please. Please… Let’s let them go this time.
I’ve always thought of Texas as a plutocratic collection of ignorant murderous thugs with whom I have nothing in common. I vote to let them go.
Give it back to Mexico
Sounds like sedition to me! I think Perry should be teabagging in jail somewhere
Take Fla with you. Good riddance.
I’m pretty sure that the real reason the Confederates seceded was due to growing central government power. The Union trying to force the illegalization of slavery only brought this issue (which had simmered under the surface for awhile) to the forefront. While slavery is of course wrong in every conceivable way, you could compare the conflict to that of the Anarchists and Fascists in Italy before Mussolini’s rise to power, albeit on a much larger scale.
I believe Texas should secede, though they won’t. Mexico would never even attempt to absorb it, the American corporatocracy still has a very firm grasp of Central and South America, one must only look back at Guatemala, Ecuador, and Panama to see how much control the United States has over the American continent. Texas could not stand alone against the power of the American military, and I highly doubt any other states, such as Vermont would try to secede along with them.
You just do that Rick Perry. Like to see Austin become the new Charleston,
You inbred tea-bagging cracker-
Rick Perry is playing to a very po’d Texas base. When it came to disaster relief for Galveston and Houston after massive hurricane damage, FEMA provided extensive assistance. The same with wild fires, floods etc. Any slick politician tells people exactly what they want to hear.
It is healthy that Texas is asserting itself, but it is all just more politics for theater. Perry figures if he plays to the Alex Jones crowd, he will increase his popularity. Alex Jones is an outstanding investigative reporter and documentary producer who has wide appeal throughout Texas. Perry just wants to cash in on all of Alex’s work and the general disenchantment that is out there.
All states are being burdened with absurd layers upon layers of federal bureaucracy. Just considering the number of Air Force bases in Texas alone makes the whole thing seem preposterous. The economy of San Antonio would fall apart and cascade through all of Texas.
Why couldn’t these morons have made this “threat” 9 years ago, and saved us the last two terms of Bush*t?
Oh, that’s right…because these morons are Texans…but I repeat myself…
YIPPEE!!! I will chip in a wad of dough to build a wall to keep those knuckle-dragging shit kickers from coming back across the border.WOW! Happy days are here again!
Wow… maybe we could use their own Patriot Act aggainst them and declare him a terrorist for trying to break up the union…??
Rick Perry is just trying to out-crazy Glen Beck. It’s a game they like to play when they are teabagging one another.
Looks like we’ll be moving that border fence north very soon. Finally, we wouldn’t have to claim George W. Bush as a fellow citizen.
Dear Texas, we will allow you to secede. But, you must take Rush Limbaugh, Joe the Plumber, and the Palin family with you.
Take Oklahoma with you, too.
This is too bad. Perry is echoing the extremisim of a recent group of right wing nuts who called themselves the Texas Republic something-or- other. Many of them got killed in a shootout with the police several years ago. Their leader is in prison. It’s too bad because Texas has produced some excellent scholars, doctors, and of course, music, and has made great contributions to this country, boneheads like W (not a real Texan), Perry, and Cornyn notwithstanding. The number of “tea baggers” (only a group of thick right wingers who are just mad they lost the election would name thier cause celeb after a sex act) that showed up for Perry’s rant probably did not exceed the attendance at a single friday night football game in Odessa.
gweed is wrong. All wars are about money. Northern capitalists could not compete with Southern capitalists because of slave labor.
Perry is an ignorant hayseed, we’ve a lot of those down here. This a lame attempt to rally the base and believe me the base is huge down here. I have never been surrounded by so many uneducated, hypocritical bible thumpers in all my life. “Governor” Bush was the worst thing that ever happened to Texas schools along with the companies he tanked while he was here. These morons still insisted on putting this man into the highest office in the world. Goes to show that thought is definitely an aquired skill here.
Oh God, please let it be true. Texans are mostly inbred and should have never been allowed to join the union. About the only good thing in Texas is the high capitol punishment rate, ergo less Texans.
Could you please take the rest of the South with you? Afterall, if at first you don’t secede, try, try again….
Please gawd! secede ASAP. And best of luck with your war with Mexico. Buh bye.
